News – Bishop’s Stortford Cemetery Bill

The Bill was deposited on 27 November 2022.

The Examination took place on 19 December and the Bill was found to be compliant with Private Business Standing Orders.

The authorities from both Houses decided that the Bill should originate in the House of Lords, and the Bill was introduced in that House on 23 January 2023.

One petition was received during the petitioning period, and can be viewed here.

Second reading, with no debate, took place on 28 February 2023.

The bill proceeded to an Opposed Bill Committee, which met on 6 and 7 July 2023. Amendments were made to the bill.

The bill had its third reading on 14 September and was sent to the House of Commons.

The Bill received its first reading in the House of Commons on 18 September 2023.

The Bill was then subject to a "Second House Examination" on 21 September 2023 to ensure that no amendments were made in the first House that trigger Standing Orders which weren’t complied with at the first Examination. It was found that no further standing orders applied to the Bill.

One petition was received during the petitioning period which ended on 16 October 2023. The petition was later withdrawn.

A carry-over motion for the Bill (to enable it to be continued with in the next session) was agreed in the House of Commons on 23 October 2023 and in the House of Lords on 24 October 2023.

The Bill was reintroduced in the House of Lords for the 2023-24 session on 9 November 2023, formally passed all its stages and was sent to the House of Commons.

The Bill was deemed to have received its first and second readings in the House of Commons on 13 November 2023.

The Bill was considered by an unopposed bill committee on 20 February 2024, and was reported with one amendment.

The Bill passed its report stage on 7 March 2024.

The Bill passed its third reading on 12 March 2024 and was sent back to the Lords.

The Lords accepted the Commons amendment.

Following agreement by both Houses on the text of the bill it received Royal Assent on 20 March. The bill is now an Act of Parliament (law).
